DOUGLAS EUGENE JOHNSTON
Lehigh Acres, Fla.
Douglas E. Johnston, 51, passed away unexpectedly due to complications of COVID-19 on Aug. 28, 2021, with his family by his side at Lee Memorial Hospital. Douglas was born on Sept. 17, 1969, to his parents, Richard E. and Marcia R. Johnston (Dennis) at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Doug graduated from Vinton High School and took apprenticeship with the Local 125 Plumbers and Pipefitters. He spent many years as a construction health and safety technician and as a certified industrial trainer. He was married to Elon Popelka on Dec. 28, 1991, and divorced in 2001. He later married Brenda Huntley on March 25, 2004.
Doug was a current board member of Fort Myers Elks club 1288 and a member of Moose Lodge 1899.
In addition to his mother, Doug is survived by his wife, Brenda; son, Trevor E. (Kaitlin) Johnston; daughter, Alana (Austin) Harold; sister, Deanne (Kevin) Alexander; and grandchildren, Bryndle, Britleigh, Kinley and one on the way.
Doug was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. Sept. 26, 2021, at the Local 125 Plumbers and Pipefitters Apprentice Center, 5101 J St. SW, Cedar Rapids, IA 52404.
