Douglas Carter Herman, 81, died Friday, May 23, 2025 at The Bird House Hospice Home in Iowa City.
An informal memorial service will be held at 1:30 PM, Thursday, May 29, 2025 at First United Methodist Church in Iowa City, where a time of fellowship will follow at the Church. Rev. Dr. Heecheon Jeon will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed the Boy Scouts of America Hawkeye Area Council or to First United Methodist Church.
Doug was born May 8,1944 in Hawarden, Iowa, where he was raised by his grandparents, Mike and Hazel Dykstra. He was a graduate of Hawarden High School. Doug received his bachelor’s degree from South Dakota State University and his master’s degree through National Science Foundation.
On August 28, 1965 Doug married Janice Schlueter.
Doug was a teacher at West High School for many years where he taught students in advanced placement classes and Project Lead the Way. Prior to moving to Iowa City, Doug taught high school in Sioux City.
Doug was an Eagle Scout and had earned the Wood Badge. He was a Boy Scout leader for many years and served on the District Council for Boy Scouts. Doug was a Ham Radio operator. He was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church where he was involved any many church activities, including the United Methodist Men’s Group.
Doug is survived by his wife, Janice; two daughters and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
