Doug Gaines, 67, of Mount Vernon, died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2023.
There will be a Celebration of Life on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Mount Vernon Fire Station.
Doug is survived by his stepchildren, Anthony Swope III (Mai Ann), Ames, Angie Dyer (Jerry), Marshalltown; his brothers, Daniel Gaines (Linda), Mount Vernon, Dean Gaines (Theresa), St. Ansgar; sister, Judy Walton, Cedar Rapids; mother, Leona Gaines, Cedar Rapids; stepgrandchildren, Bradley, Jonathan, Contessa, Aurora, Hannah; nephews and niece, Ben Walton (Renee), Kurt Gaines, Scott Gaines and Cassandra Gaines.
He was preceded in death by Susie Wheeler (wife), James Gaines (father), and Ellen Deerberg (sister).
Doug married Susie Wheeler in April of 2012, she died in 2017. Doug served on the Mount Vernon Fire Department from 1978 to 1997, retiring as Ladder Captain.
