Dotson, Vernon W.
Vernon W. Dotson, 64, of Iowa City, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2010, following a long illness. A memorial Mass will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 29, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Iowa City, with the Rev. Michael T. Phillips officiating. A gathering for family and friends will be held at the church from 1 p.m. until service time.
Vernon was born in St. Joseph, Mo., on Nov. 10, 1946, the son of Vernon H. and Margaret Dotson. He was raised in St. Joseph, Mo., and later graduated from Missouri Western State University, with a degree in accounting. For over 36 years, Vernon worked as an accountant for the Federal Government before retiring in 2005. On Oct. 20, 2004, Vernon married Denise Phelps in Iowa City.
Vernon truly cherished the time spent with his family. In his spare time, he enjoyed reading, watching movies, walking and simply the outdoors.
Survivors include his wife, Denise of Iowa City; a son, David Dotson of Waukegan, Ill.; his mother, Margaret Dotson of St. Joseph, Mo.; a sister, Linda Dotson of St. Joseph, Mo.; his two stepsons, Mark (Elizabeth) Phelps of Iowa City and Jason Phelps of Burnsville, Minn.; two granddaughters, Danielle and Samantha Dotson; and a stepgranddaughter, Alexandra Phelps.
Vernon was preceded in death by his father, and a sister, Wanda Dotson.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Iowa City Hospice.
