Dorothy Mae Wood, 92, of North Liberty, passed away Monday, Feb. 27, 2017, at Mercy Iowa City following a brief illness. Private family services will take place at Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City. Gay & Ciha Funeral & Cremation Service is caring for Dorothy's family and her arrangements. Online condolences may be sent for her family through the website at www.gayandciha.com.
Dorothy was born May 30, 1924, in Solon, Iowa, to David and Bessie (Comp) Sparks. She was married to Robert "Bob" Wood on Dec. 30, 1946, in Cedar Rapids. They were together for 68 years, until his death in 2014. After her children were school age, she took a job outside of the home and enjoyed working for 20 years for the University of Iowa in the housekeeping department.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bob; daughter, Roberta; and sisters, Ora Fare and Lavonne Lewig.
She is survived by her children, Wayne (Judy) Wood of North Liberty and Teresa (Kurt) Goering of Phoenix, Ariz.; five grandchildren, Brian (Twila) Dusterhoft of Coralville, Jason (Tina) Dusterhoft of Austin, Texas, Sharon (Aaron) Schott of North Liberty and Adam and Alex Goering of Phoenix; six great-grandchildren; siblings, David (Shirley) Sparks of Ankeny, Fae (Larry) Edwards of Cedar Rapids and Mary Wood of Lone Tree; and Polly Pagliai of Iowa City and John Gray of Solon, good friends of her children since high school, who honored Dorothy with visits, cards, treats and flowers for decades, especially later in her life.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Iowa City Hospice, 1025 Wade St., Iowa City, who took great care of Bob before his passing and helped Dorothy tremendously during that time.
