Dorothy Hanken Sauer, 98, died Wednesday, July 23, 2014, at the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following a brief illness. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, July 26, at St. John Lutheran Church, rural Monticello, where friends may call after noon. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Friends may call until service time at the church. The Rev. Reed Stockman will officiate at the services.

Surviving are her sister, Freda Lawrence, Monticello; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Rufus Hanken and Henry Sauer; three brothers, Merle, Robert and Donald Hart; and her sister, Helen Mead.
Dorothy Hart was born June 10, 1916, in Buffalo Township, Linn County, Iowa, the daughter of Howard and Maude Anderson Hart. She attended Anderson School No. 6 near her home and graduated from the Anamosa Community Schools. She then worked at the Reliance Shirt Factory. Dorothy married Rufus Hanken on April 14, 1936, in Cedar Rapids. The couple owned and operated a locker plant in Prairieburg for a number of years. Dorothy worked at Citizens Bank in Anamosa until 1962, when the couple moved to Mesa, Ariz. Rufus died Dec. 31, 1974. Dorothy was employed at Arizona Bank in Mesa until she retired in 1979. Dorothy married Henry "Hank" Sauer on March 5, 1980, at All Saints Church in Mesa. The couple lived in Mesa during the winter months and visited family and friends in Iowa and New York in the summer. Hank died Nov. 19, 1991.
Dorothy returned to Iowa in December 1996 and made her home in Monticello. She was one of the original owners in Maplewood Estates.
Dorothy was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, where she was confirmed on July 27, 1941.
