Dorothy R. Rowland, 91, longtime resident of Iowa City, died Wednesday, July 29, 2015.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 7, at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa City with a time of visitation one hour prior. There will be a time of refreshments and fellowship in the church hall immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Dorothy's name can be made to the church or organization of your choice. Online condolences can be sent to her family at www.gayandciha.com.
Dorothy Ruth (Holt) Rowland was born Jan. 2, 1924, in Galesburg, Ill., the daughter of Sidney and Minnie (Milne) Holt. She graduated from Oneida High School and attended nursing school at Cottage Hospital School of Nursing in Galesburg. She worked for several years at a private office before marrying Wilfred "Bill" Rowland on July 2, 1950. Soon after, they would move to Iowa City where Dorothy would begin a 35-year career with the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics as an orthopedic nurse.
For many years, Bill and Dorothy traveled the states, visiting friends and family. In more recent years, she enjoyed her collections of antiques, reading, being a part of the Happy Pig Collectors Club, Questers Club, bridge club, time spent volunteering at the Senior Center and participating in church groups. Dorothy was instrumental in organizing, providing and serving countless funeral lunches for members and families of the church over the past many years.
Her family includes her brother, Gene "Pete" Holt of Oneida, Ill.; numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family; and her dear friend, Becky Schneider of Vinton.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, in 2003; her parents; and siblings, James Holt, Dwight Holt, Robert Holt, Isabel Kneer, Mary Margaret Holt and Catherine Glass.
