Dorothy Lee McMaster, 94, of Colorado Springs, Colo., formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2014, at Cheyenne Mountain Care Center in Colorado Springs. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Friday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Interment will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Carol Ann Heitz of Colorado Springs, Colo.; three grandsons, Justin Ely Heitz (Rhonda) of Denver, Colo., Grant Demian McMaster of Phoenix, Ariz., and Ryan Garrick Heitz (Jessie) of Potomac, Md.; three great-granddaughters, Emilie Justine Heitz of Denver, Colo., Merril Yihua Heitz of Potomac, Md., and Samantha Grace Heitz of Denver, Colo.; one great-grandson, Garrick Qihua Heitz of Potomac, Md.; one nephew, Jack May of Silver City, Iowa; four nieces, Jacqueline Irvine of Westlake Village, Calif., Shirley Batchelor of Valentine, Neb., Sharon Hayes of Council Bluffs and Mary Ann Nightser of Papillion, Neb.; as well as Pat Biderman of Marion, who was like a daughter.
In 1974, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Wayne. Also, one son, Scott Edmond, in 1992; her father and mother, Leo and Alta (Dennis) May; three brothers, Gerald May, Lyle May and Leo May; one sister, Blanche Moss; one infant sister, Alta Harriet May; two nephews, Gerald May Jr. and David Moss; and one niece, Ellen Lee Coleman.
Dorothy was born April 12, 1920, the daughter of Alta and Leo May in Bassett, Neb. When she was 2 years old, her family moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa, where she lived until she was 15 years old. It was then that she went to live with her sister in Ottumwa. She attended Ottumwa High School and graduated with the class of 1939.
In 1941, she married Wayne McMaster in Kirksville, Mo., and lived in Cedar Rapids until he went into the service. While he was in England, their son, Scott, was born, and when the war was over, they settled in Fairfield, Iowa. It was there that they were blessed with their daughter, Carol. From there they moved to Bettendorf, where they lived until they moved back to Cedar Rapids in 1955. It was then that they built their home at 630 Grant Wood Dr. SE. Dorothy lived there for 30 years, the last 12 years by herself.
After her husband's death, she worked at Barlow-Moon Cleaners, then 14 years at Lagle's Card and Party Store before retiring in 1985.
In 2002, she moved to Colorado with her daughter and lived there until her death.
She belonged to the Woman's Club, Justice for Jessica and the Siebke-Hoyt Group.
Dorothy would like to be remembered as a good mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
