Dorothy Mae Dake, 83, died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2018, at The Gardens of Cedar Rapids following a brief illness.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, at the First Christian Church in Vinton, with the Rev. Dave Neas officiating. Visitation will be at the church from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 6, and for an hour before services on Tuesday.
Dorothy was born April 30, 1935, in Vinton, Iowa, the daughter of Wesley and Mabel Huppert Horak. She was raised on her parents' farm south of Brandon. She attended Harrison #2 country school and graduated from Brandon High School.
On March 5, 1954, Dorothy was united in marriage with Kenneth L. Dake at the Brandon United Methodist Church. The couple farmed together in Benton County.
Dorothy worked in the office at the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School for five years and then stayed home to raise her children.
Dorothy was a member of First Christian Church in Vinton, participating in Christian Women's Fellowship and teaching Sunday school. She also was a scout leader.
Dorothy is survived by her husband of 64 years, Kenneth, of Vinton; four daughters, Linda (Don) Duffie of Kearney, Neb., Donna (Gary) Batey of Mount Pleasant, Sandra (Kim) Frahm of Kellogg and Diane (Mike) Vance of Knoxville, Tenn.; one brother, Merle (Thelma) Horak of Vinton; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
A memorial fund has been established.
