Dorothy M. Henderson, 98, of Fairfax, formerly of Coggon, died at her home on Thursday, March 11, 2021. A private family service will be held at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. A livestream of the funeral service may be accessed on the funeral home website under the obituary for Dorothy Henderson, under the video tab starting at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 20. Inurnment at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. There will be a visitation on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Cedar Memorial Park Stateroom. Following the continued guidance from health officials, physical distancing must be practiced, which requires a limited number of people allowed into the visitation at one time. The use of face masks or shields is required.
Dorothy was born Aug. 21, 1922, to J. Parke and Cassie (Moles) Forrest on a farm near Central City, Iowa. She attended a one-room rural school, graduated from Central City High School, attended Iowa State Teachers College after which she taught in the rural schools of Linn and Delaware Counties. On May 29, 1946, following World War II, she married Richard (Dick) Henderson. Three sons were born to this union, the family residing in Coggon, Iowa.
She was an active member of Zion Presbyterian Church. Of utmost importance were her faith in Jesus, her family and her friends. Dorothy's favorite times included those spent on the bleachers as a spectator and fan at the athletic contests and musical events involving her sons and later her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also enjoyed golf, square and ballroom dancing, shuffleboard, playing cards, board games and puzzles. After moving to Cedar Rapids in 1978, she became a member of New Covenant Bible Church and treasured her Pathfinders class there.She was a dedicated volunteer at Bridgehaven almost to the very end.
Her family includes her three sons, David (Jeanne), Douglas (Joyce) and Daryl (Manyee); grandchildren, Anthony (Melissa), Anne, Amy, Holly (Dustin Palmersheim), Ashley (Joseph Lynn) and Daniel; great-grandchildren, Alexis, Zac, Emily, Kendall, Tyler, Skylar and Austin.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Richard (Dicks) Henderson; brother, Greydon Forrest; sister, Marie Wenger; infant granddaughter, Jamie; and infant great-granddaughter, Zoe.
