Cedar Rapids
Dorothy "Jean" Edwards Lukehart Cotter, 89, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2022, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy following a long illness. A private family burial will take place at Kent Chapel Cemetery, Brooklyn, Iowa. Teahen Funeral Home is serving the family.
Dorothy was born near Maryville, Mo., to Findley and Dorothy Edwards on Nov. 9, 1932. She attended a one-room school house until eighth grade and then went onto Horace Mann High School, where she graduated in 1950, which was on the grounds of Northwest Missouri State Teacher's College. Having moved to Des Moines, she met Edd Lukehart, whom she married in 1951. Edd was offered a job by Van Meter Electric in 1952 and the couple moved to Cedar Rapids. Following their son Gregg's birth in 1958, Jean worked at Nissan Corp. as a sewing machine operator until they closed. Edd passed away in 1978. In 1981, Jean married John Cotter. She then worked as a temp before being hired on by Teleconnect. In 1997, she retired from the Amana Refrigeration Warranty Department. While she and John enjoyed spending the winters in Florida, she held a summer job at Toyota Insurance. Jean was a member of St. Paul's Methodist Church for 40 years.
Jean is survived by her son, Gregg (Paula) of Whittier, Iowa; grandchildren, Nicole Lukehart, Brittany (Joshua) Baily and Travis Lukehart; and four great-grandchildren of Marion; sister, Gerri Berry of Pensacola, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her two husbands, a brother and two sisters.
