Dorothy Jean Hahn, 90, of Solon, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018, at the Solon Nursing Care Center. Celebration of Life Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, 2018, at the Solon United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be two hours prior to services Thursday at the Church. Brosh Chapel in Solon is handling Jean's arrangements.
Dorothy Jean was born Dec. 9, 1927, on a farm near Iowa City, the daughter of Joseph F. and Nevada (Kessler) Buchmayer. She attended Newport #3 School until eighth grade and graduated from Iowa City High in 1945. Jean was united in marriage to Elmer L. Hahn on Feb. 13, 1947, at First Methodist Church in Iowa City. Jean was a dedicated wife and mother. She worked at Solon schools in the hot lunch program. Jean was an active member of Solon United Methodist Church, serving as membership secretary and a member of the United Methodist Women. She also was a member of the Eagles and the Retired Eagles Activity Club, where she recently was presented the Living Hall of Fame Award. She had many interests, including sewing, reading and gardening, as well as dancing.
Jean is survived by her children, Gary (Kathy) Hahn of Denver, Colo., Beckie (Myron) Smalley of Iowa City and Julie (Jeff) Kessler of Solon; eight grandchildren, Brian (Katie) Hahn, Kelly (Brian) Fletcher, Kevin (Brittany Hanze) Hahn, Kristin (Scott) Mayo, Jenna Smalley, Chelsea (Justin Broich) Smalley, Justin Kessler and Jordan Kessler; great-grandchildren, Dylan Hahn, Boden and Barrett Fletcher and Nile, Kallan and Ashlyn Mayo; a brother-in-law, Clarence (Miriam) Hahn of Castle Rock, Colo.; sister-in-law, Leona Buchmayer of Solon; as well as nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Elmer; her sister and brother-in-law, Orianna and Robert Haman; and her brother, Karl Buchmayer.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at the Solon Care Center and Iowa City Hospice for the kind and compassionate care they have given to Jean over the past months.
