Dorothy "Dottie" Belle Simmons, 79, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, March 25, 2018. Funeral service: 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 30, Murdoch-Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial: 3 p.m. Friday, March 30, at Taylor Cemetery, near Unionville, Iowa, Appanoose County.
Dottie was born Nov. 29, 1938, in Floris, Iowa, the daughter of Samuel and Crystal (Johnson) Arnold. She married Mike "Mickey" Simmons on Aug. 30, 1969, in Iowa City. In her younger years, Dottie was a press operator. She was a proud Eagles Club member with 22 years of service and was a past madam president. Dottie also was a dedicated volunteer at the American Legion. She was an avid bingo player and often would dress up as Dorothy from "The Wizard of Oz," with ruby slippers and all. Dottie was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her family.
She is survived by her children, Buddy Fenton, Carrie Kimm, Aileen (Lloyd) Frazier and Bobby Simmons, all of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Dottie was preceded in death by her husband, Mike "Mickey" Simmons; parents; infant brothers, Dale and Dean Arnold; and sister, Delores Hunt.
