DORIS RYAN
Cedar Rapids
Doris L. Ryan, 86, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, April 21, 2015, at her home following a long illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Jude Catholic Church, by the Rev. Mark Reasoner. Burial: St. Joseph
Cemetery. A vigil service will be Monday at 4 p.m. at Teahen Funeral Home, where friends may visit with the family from 4 to 8 p.m., and again on Tuesday after 9:30 a.m. at the church.
Doris was born in Oakland, Iowa, the fourth child of Earl and Edith (Strong) Campbell. Her family later moved to a farm in Eastern Iowa, where she graduated with the West Liberty High School class of 1947. She married Robert Foran in 1952. She worked as both a nanny and a sales clerk before beginning her career as a sales associate and buyer for J.C. Penney.
Doris married Jim Ryan on June 13, 1967. She enjoyed working as a homemaker and later as a sales associate in the children's department at Armstrong's Department Store until its closure. Doris was proud to serve many longtime customers who relied on her sense of fashion to dress their children each season.
Doris enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and had a true love of fashion and a talent for shopping – she never missed a sale.
Doris' faith in God was central to her life as she was an active member of St. Jude Catholic Church for 48 years. During this time she served as an Eucharistic minister and was very active in various prayer groups, and an active Sweet Corn Festival volunteer. She and Jim loved to travel, especially enjoying trips to Democratic Party conventions, Washington, D.C., and Ireland, where she was lucky enough to kiss the Blarney Stone.
Doris will be remembered for her deep faith in God, joy for living life to the fullest and her witty sense of humor.
She was a dedicated wife, mother and grand-mother and counted it a blessing to have lived long enough to see so many of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow and prosper. The last years of her life Doris was assisted by the hands of many angels here on Earth, including the nurses, doctors and staff at Mercy Medical Center, the St. Luke's Cancer Treatment Center, the Right at Home staff and Hospice Compassus, who took such good care of her during her illness.
Doris is survived by her husband, Jim of Cedar Rapids; two daughters, Karen (Larry) Schall of Cedar Rapids and Laura (Shane) Ryan Ripley of Dubuque; one stepson, Chris Ryan of Kailua Kona, Hawaii; grandchildren, Melissa Fenton, Shaun (Jessica) Fenton, Matthew Schall, Amber Schall and Christopher, Isaac and Monica Ripley; great-grandchildren, Noah and Alex Hess, Quinlynn, Ashleigh and Izayah Fenton; a brother, Donovon (Shirley) Campbell; and a sister, Marjorie (Don Meeker) Meyers.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a stepson, Dan Ryan; a sister, Betty Hormel; brothers, Norman and James Campbell; and a great-granddaughter, Stazia Fenton.
Doris will be greatly missed and never forgotten.
Memorials may be sent to St. Jude Catholic Church.
