DONALD YOUNG Tipton Donald G. Young, 75, of Tipton, passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2015, of malignant melanoma at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City. Per his wishes, his body has been donated to the University of Iowa College of Medicine and no funeral service will be held. Please join the family to visit and share memories at the Tipton Golf and Country Club on Saturday, April 18, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Don was born Oct. 6, 1939, to Lillian and Guy Young in Pana, Ill. After the death of his mother at a young age, Louis and Hazel Thordsen of Tipton welcomed him into their home. Don graduated from Stanwood High School in 1957. On June 9, 1961, he graduated from the University of Iowa with a B.S. in accounting. That evening he married Donna Horr and for the next 54 years they have made their home in Tipton. Don worked in banking and finance in Tipton, Cedar Rapids and Iowa City, retiring in 2002. He was a kind, caring, giving man who loved serving his community of Tipton. Over the years he took part in the Tipton Chamber of Commerce and the Tipton Economic Development Corporation. As president of the Tipton Community school board, he was most proud of the construction of a new school track. Don was mayor of Tipton from 2000 to 2008 and was instrumental in the building of the Kennedy Family Aquatic Center. He was a longtime volunteer at Tipton school events and enjoyed working at high school track meets, announcing football games, timing at swim meets, running the scoreboard for basketball games and helping at speech and music contests. Don was a member of First United Church of Christ of Tipton, serving as a trustee, elder, treasurer and president of the council. He was a 32-year survivor of leukemia, receiving a bone marrow donation from his brother, Ray, under the care of Dr. Roger Gingrich, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City. Don will be remembered and missed by his family: his wife, Donna Young of Tipton; son, Brian (Nancy) Young of Los Angeles; daughter, Susan (Tracy) Cooper of Austin, Texas; and grandsons, Caden and Coy Cooper. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Francis Young and L. Ray Young; and sisters, Leona Fries and Laura O'Connell.
