DONALD WESTON
Cedar Rapids
Donald G. Weston, 88, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, peacefully passed away on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2017. His family will hold a private celebration of Don's life at a later date.
Don was born on March 22, 1929, in Anderson, Ind., the son of John and Nellie (Lawson) Weston. He was the oldest of eight children. He married Betty Sylvester on June 27, 1948. Don proudly served in the Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict, but was selected to be a member of the Marine Corps Rifle Team, competing for the Marine Corps and serving as a rifle instructor.
After his service, Don began a lifetime in the wood industry, early on as a tree surgeon and hardwood timber buyer. For the last 25 years of his career, Don designed and sold hardwood veneer sawmills as president of Cedar Valley Equipment Corp. During this time, Don designed and sold some of the largest hardwood veneer sawmills on the East Coast.
Don always remained an outstanding marksman, was a fair fastpitch softball pitcher, and low handicap golfer. He could beat most at billiards, cards and pingpong. Don loved doing lawn and tree work. He lived a very healthy life, priding himself that he took no medication until his final months. Don had a keen sense of humor and enjoyed all kinds of music. He could talk your ear off, and often did. Most of all, Don was a devoted father and grandfather.
Don is survived by his wife of 69 years, Betty; son, Mike (Julia) of Cedar Rapids, and grandchildren, Ben (Leah) of West Des Moines, Tyler (Adisa) of Naperville, Ill., and Zachary, Katie and Mary, all of Cedar Rapids; and son, Greg (Suzanne) of Cedar Rapids, and grandchildren, Derek of Iowa City, Sarah (Clint Loonan) of Cedar Rapids, Jared of Iowa City and Hannah Bousek (Robert) of Cedar Rapids. Don also had five great-grandchildren. Don also is survived by his brothers, John, Dick, Monte and Larry; and his sister, Bernice Pence.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sisters, Neta Jean and Mary Catherine.
Donations in memory of Don should be directed to The Salvation Army.
