DONALD VYSKOCIL
Cedar Rapids
Donald Henry Vyskocil, 71, passed away Jan. 4, 2015. He was the son of Charles H. and Lillian F. Vyskocil of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
As a youth Don was active in the Boy Scouts of America, earning his Eagle Scout award in 1959. After graduating in 1961 from Jefferson Senior High School, he completed two years active duty in the U.S. Navy and went on to earn a bachelor's in sociology from the University of Iowa (class of '68).
In 2009, Don retired after 27 years of professional service with the Boy Scouts. At the time he retired he was territory manager with BSA's national supply division and living in Houston, Texas. He moved to Corpus Christi where he enjoyed island life and pursued his love of fishing and wildlife gourd art. His art won many awards and was featured in many galleries around the state. He was an active member of the men's club at St. Bartholomew's, volunteered at two local wildlife rehabilitation facilities (the A.R.K in Port Aransas and the Texas Sealife Center on North Padre Island) and participated in the Turtle Patrol searching for nesting endangered Kemp's Ridley turtles at Padre Island National Seashore.
He was preceded in death by his parents and older brothers, Chuck and Dick, of Cedar Rapids.
He is survived by his wife, Susan Vyskocil of Corpus Christi, Texas, two sons, David (Brandy) Vyskocil of Brenham, Texas, and Nathan Vyskocil of Austin, Texas; two stepsons, Kenton (Michelle) Brannan of Houston, Texas, and Ryan (Lindsey) Brannan of Corpus Christi; and six beautiful grandchildren Kailey, Parker, Rylie, Mya, Jaxon and (coming soon) Zoey.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church in Corpus Christi followed by a celebration of his life in the parish hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, the Texas Sealife Center or the Boy Scouts of America.
