He graduated from Tama High School in 1946 and in October 1946, Don enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served for three years. Don felt honored to be able to go to Washington, D.C., on an Honor Flight in May 2014 with his step-grandson, Christopher, who accompanied him as his guardian. After moving to Cedar Rapids, Don was employed at Cryovac Division of W.R. Grace for 38 years, retiring in 1994. In the spring of 1967, Don became a Mason and was affiliated with Mizpah Lodge and later in 1967, he became a member of El Kahir Shrine and El Kahir Shrine Color Guard. He was a very proud Shriner and several times he transported children to the Shrine Hospital in Minneapolis, Minn. Don thoroughly enjoyed the times he went to the Iowa Hawkeyes football games as well as watching the Chicago Cubs on television.
He is survived by his beautiful daughter, Gwen Twiselton of Spring, Texas; his wife, Shirley; stepsons, James (Justine) Meyerhoff and Jerry Meyerhoff, both of Cedar Rapids; stepgrandchildren, Molly (Craig) Olson of Waukee, Kelsey (Cody) Graves of Central City, and Christopher, Kimberlee and Samantha Meyerhoff of Cedar Rapids; stepgreat-grandchildren, Brandon and Abby Olson of Waukee; and a niece, Sarah of Cedar Rapids.
