DONALD SHAFFER

Donald M. Shaffer, 89, passed from this earth to the loving arms of his Savior on Jan. 28, 2015. Graveside services will be Monday, Feb. 9, at Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton, with Pastor Stephen Preuss officiating. The time of the committal service will be scheduled later.
Donald was born April 6, 1925, in Mallard, to John and Esther (McDumott) Shaffer. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of American Legion Post 57 of Vinton and the Lorenz VFW.
Don worked for Herson Construction of Lorenz. This job brought him to Vinton to paint the interior of the newly constructed Trinity Lutheran Church, where he later became a member.
During this time he met Goldie Alpers Wright, whom he married Sept. 2, 1979. Goldie and Don continued to operate the Modern Motel until their retirement in 1997.
Survivors include his wife, Goldie; his stepson, Steven (Joyce) Wright of Cambridge; stepdaughters, Judy (Joe Wood Jr.) Burkey of Vinton and Kathy (Rod) Potter of Ankeny; six stepgrandchildren;and seven stepgreat-grandchildren.
