Donald "Jib" Seydel, 85, of Iowa City, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014, at Windmill Manor in Coralville. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at Lensing Funeral Home in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until service time Friday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association in care of Lensing Funeral Home, 605 Kirkwood Ave., P.O. Box 167, Iowa City,
IA 52240.
Don was born July 21, 1929, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Leroy and Viola (Sorenson) Seydel. He was a 1947 graduate of City High and following graduation joined the United States Air Force. Upon returning from the service, Don went to work as a carpenter. On Dec. 29, 1957, he married Kathryn Junette Norberg in Hoople, Ill.
Don had many interests which included spending time with his family, traveling, attending and watching Hawkeye football games and bowling. His greatest interest was raising and racing homing pigeons. He also belonged to several pigeon clubs and had Iowa City's last allowable pigeon loft.
Survivors include his wife, Kathryn (June) of Iowa City; three children, Kathy Seydel of North Liberty, James Seydel of Chicago and Michael Seydel of Mankato, Minn.; one grandson, Jesse (Katie) Seydel of North Liberty, one great-grandson, Jacob Stoll of Cascade; a sister, Lila Miller of Monument, Colo.; and a sister-in-law, Doris Seydel, formerly of Readlyn, now residing in Coon Rapids.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Hartley Seydel; and his beloved dog, Lucy.
