Donald “Red” McElligott, 91, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, March 30, 2023. Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. Monday, April 3, at St. Ludmila Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be 1 p.m. April 3, at St. Ludmila Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Monti. Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Cedar Rapids is in charge of arrangements.
Donald was born Nov. 19, 1931, in Masonville, the son of William Ervin and Clara (Ryan) McElligott. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1951-54, during the Korean conflict. Don began working in the Ryan area, beginning with the Ryan and Coggon Creamery, and later was an over the road truck driver. He was proud of his driving career, and was fortunate to still be driving into his mid 80s. He was born, raised and enjoyed life on the farm. Don’s generosity was well appreciated by his family and close friends.
Don is survived by his brother, Leo McElligott; his sister, Marge Bleakmore; as well as his nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by parents; his siblings, Ambrose (Alice) McElligott, Mariam (Richard) Flaherty and Kathleen (Robert) Long; sister-in-law, Peggy McElligott; and a brother-in-law, Bob Bleakmore.
