Don was born December 6, 1950 in Iowa City, IA, the son of Raymond and Marie (Klouda) Hotz. He graduated from Lone Tree High School in 1969. After attending Iowa State University for a year, he returned home to farm due to his father’s illness. He was a lifelong farmer, enjoying the cycles of nature in planting and harvesting. He also enjoyed watching sports on TV, particularly football and basketball and those Hawkeyes! Extended family holiday celebrations were a favorite and country music was also enjoyed. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lone Tree.
He will be deeply missed by his three sisters: Darlene (Denny) Stirling of Humboldt; Dorothy Lynn of North Liberty and her children, Debra (Jeremy) Neppl with their son, Nathan, Barb Lynn (Dawn Cooksley), and Joe (Ashley) Lynn with their children, Skylar and Austin; and Donna (Allen) Sessler of Waterloo.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Joseph Lynn.
