Donald Ray Montgomery, 91, died Monday, June 5, 2023, at the Vinton Lutheran Home.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p[.m. Wednesday, June 7, 2023, at the Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. Sixth St. in Vinton. Family graveside services will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery on Thursday.
Don was born on Aug. 30, 1931, on the family farm in Harrison Township, Benton County, the son of Guy E. and Olive E. (Ferguson) Montgomery. On Feb. 3, 1952, he was united in marriage to Elaine Byse at Central Park Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids.
Don worked for Pioneer Seed Company, retiring in 1996. Don enjoyed reading, yard work, and playing cards. Don and Elaine loved spending time at their summer home at Harpers Ferry on the Mississippi river, spending over 63 years at Taylor’s Court, boating, and fishing. After retirement, they became snowbirds, spending nine winters in Harlingen, Texas. Spending time with grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and attending their activities, was his greatest joy.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years; Elaine; daughter-in-law, Jeanne Montgomery (Alan Garwood); sisters-in-law, Barb Montgomery and Patricia Schuetzle; brother-in-law, Lowell Byse; granddaughters, Angela (Kyle) Horak, Beth (Justin) Hendryx; great-granddaughters, Allissa Hendryx, Emilie (Jacob) Worthen, Abbye Hendryx; stepgreat-grandson, Kaleb (Erica) Horak; stepgreat-granddaughter, Makenzie (Jesse) Rambo; and great-great-granddaughter, Athena Rambo.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son Stephen Ray Montgomery on Jan. 12, 2003; in-laws, Lowell and Reta Byse; sisters, Verla (Lyle) Geiger and Betty (Harold) Butts; and brother, Russell Montgomery
