Donald P. McCarthy, 68, of Monticello, died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, at his residence, after a long illness. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, at the Kramer Funeral Home in Monticello, where a funeral service will commence at 7 p.m. Private burial will be held at a later date at Oakwood Cemetery in Monticello.
Don was born Aug. 4, 1945, in Cascade, Iowa, the son of Loras and Isabella (Koob) McCarthy. He married Sandra Starks on Nov. 28, 1964, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Monticello. He began his career at Energy Manufacturing in Monticello in 1964, and played many roles there for over 40 years. His latest role was as the plant supervisor. Don loved being outdoors hunting, fishing, camping or gardening. He also enjoyed a good card game.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sandy; four children, Don (Pam) McCarthy Jr. and Ron McCarthy, both of Monticello, Chris (Tully) Reilly of Manchester and Jason (Debbie) McCarthy of Kansas City, Mo.; six grandchildren, Morgan (fiance, Spencer Owen), Tyler and Courtney McCarthy, Kyle, Brent and Logan Reilly; two brothers, L.J. (Najette) McCarthy of Onslow and Ed (Sharon) McCarthy of Cascade; and many brothers and sisters-in-law.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his parents-in-law, a sister-in-law and two brothers-in-law.
Memorials are preferred to the Alzheimers Association.
