Donald Brown McBain Jr, 82, of Marion died peacefully in his sleep at his home on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, with services on at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 7, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories with one hour of visitation before the start of the service. Burial will be in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery in the Resthaven section.
Don was born April 19, 1931, in Keokuk, Iowa, to Donald and Eleanor McBain (both deceased). His family includes his sister, Jeannie Alice Klein (deceased); and a niece, Claudia Zimmerman and her husband, William of Waterloo, Ill.; and a grandniece and grandnephew.
Don graduated from Keokuk High School in 1949 and then entered Iowa State College (ISU) participating in the ROTC program. He graduated in 1955 as a second lieutenant. He immediately entered Officer Training at The Signal School, Fort Monmoth, New Jersey. As a supply officer in the 505th Signal Corp, Don served two years at Fort Richardson, Alaska.
He moved to Cedar Rapids in 1957 to take a job at Collins Radio (Rockwell). Don established the Graphic Arts Department to support the Apollo Space Program working as the art director until his retirement in 1995.
In 1961, Don married Luella Caroline Ullerich (deceased).
Don is survived by his daughter, Caroline McNall and her husband, Todd and their two daughters, Michelle and Allyson of Cedar Rapids. He is also survived by his son, Donald McBain IV and his wife, Rhonda of Mount Horeb, Wis., and their children, Maggie and Colin.
In 1995, Don married Janet Davis Gorman, blending his family with her family including, Paul Gorman and his son, Michael of Phoenix; Kevin Gorman and his wife, Melinda of Boone and their children, Jon and his wife, Nettie, Daniel, Jennifer and Qiana; Anne Weaver and her husband, Jim of Pryor, Okla., and children Kelly Bailey and her husband, Ben of Marion and their two sons and Eric Weaver and Jen Walser and their two children, David Gorman and his wife, Terry and children, Melissa Gunzenhauser and her husband, Jeremiah, Matthew Gorman and his fiance, Erin Downing, and Patrick Gorman and his wife, Lacey and their two children, Lisa Lynch and her husband, Jay (deceased) and their son, Kyle and his wife, Alyce and son.
The blending of these two families made for a wonderful clan providing many years of happy holidays and unforgettable get- togethers.
Don's interests included getting together with his lifelong Rockwell Collins friends for lunch, collecting phonograph records, enjoying music, electronics and dabbling in the latest technology.
The family would like to thank Don's caregivers from Hospice of Mercy and Donna, Sam and Jamie from Home Choice.
Instead of flowers the family requests memorials to be made to Christ Episcopal Church in Cedar Rapids or Hospice of Mercy.
