Don, "Dutch" as he was known by many, was born to Henry and Margaret Kray Lorenzen, on Aug. 18, 1926, at home in Amber, Iowa. Don attended Wilson High School, where he enjoyed playing football. After graduation, he joined the Navy and served his country during World War II. Don married Mary Ann Stusak on Aug. 22, 1945 in Cedar Rapids. Don and Mary Ann were blessed with three sons. They were married for nearly 72 fulfilling years. Don was a sheet metal journeyman, retiring from Quaker Oats in 1992. He was an active member of Sheet Metal Workers Union Local 263, where he received his 66-year pin.
Dutch loved the outdoors and took many memorable fishing trips to Shabu, Canada, with his family over the years. He was an avid deer hunter, hunting in northeast Iowa in the Waukon/Dorchester area annually. Dutch spent many Saturday mornings in the fall hunting pheasants with his family. After spending many years traveling all over the Midwest following his sons' sports team, he found the slower pace of camping to his liking. Many special memories were made on trips to the rivers and lakes of Middle America as well as the Rocky Mountains in their "Yellowstone RV." After many years, the Yellowstone was retired to its permanent location at Camelot Campgrounds. Swimming, playing toss-ums, fishing and the traditional day-ending campfire occupied his time on the weekends at Camelot. One special milestone in his life was taking part in the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., in 2012 to see the World War II Memorial along with the other monuments. Dutch and Mary Ann hosted many holiday gatherings at their home where he truly enjoyed spending time with friends and relatives. Don immensely enjoyed dinners with their children and was very proud of the extended family he and "Ma" were responsible for creating.
He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 72 years, Mary Ann of Cedar Rapids; his three sons, Dick (Dawn) Lorenzen of Cedar Rapids, Donnie (Diane) Lorenzen Jr. of Swisher and Gary (Karen) Lorenzen of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Amie Haumesser, Jill Lorenzen, Jessica Hunt, Kimberly Cochran and Josh Lorenzen; and 12 great-grandchildren, Ashlee, Samantha and Tyler Haumesser, Ayla and Skye Secor, Nathan, Nyah, Seth and Selah Hunt, Alayna and Jace Cochran and Maci Lorenzen.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Fred and Earl; as well as his father-in-law, Leonard Stusak; and mother-in-law, Mary Stusak.
Dutch will be best remembered for how much he loved his beloved wife Mary Ann and all of his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and uncle and will be greatly missed.
