He married the love of his life, Sheri Jansa, on June 24, 1971, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Solon. They were blessed with a beautiful daughter, Karen. They enjoyed 40 beautiful years together until she preceded him in death. He was the best "papa" to his special granddaughters, Erin and Rachel Taber, who he enjoyed taking fishing and watching their many activities.
He enlisted in the Army Reserve in December 1968 and served in the Army Reserve as a specialist five USAR medical corpsman from June 1970 until November 1974. He was an active outdoorsman. He enjoyed deer hunting every year with his hunting buddies and going turkey hunting. He loved fishing at Lake Macbride and ice fishing with his beloved wife Sheri. He also got a kick out of taking his daughter mushroom hunting. He loved to watch NASCAR and looked forward to going to the Newton Speedway races. He was an Iowa Hawkeye fan and was entertained watching college and professional football and basketball games. He had a good time going to a good tractor pull with his brother-in-law, Mark. He had fun making sauerkraut with his sister, Nancy, and brother-in-law, Mark, brother-in-law Loren, and sister-in-law, Cathy.
