Donald K. Herb, 82, of Hiawatha, passed away peacefully on March 20, 2019, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown after a long battle with Parkinson's. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, March 31, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, with a Masonic service. A luncheon will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Moose Lodge, 1820 West Post Rd. SW, Cedar Rapids. Entrusted with the arrangements is Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.
Don was born on Sept. 5, 1936, the son of David and Marie Herb. Don graduated from Roosevelt High School. He then honorably served in the U.S. Navy, where he became a chef in the Korean War. After his service, he continued to cook in many restaurants. Don was a lifetime member of the American Legion as well as a member and past master of the Masonic Lodge. After retiring from Klein Tool, he went on to work at the Moose Lodge and received his Golden Coat. In his free time, Don enjoyed bowling, fishing, building decks, golf and spending time with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; three daughters, Amy (Jim) Christianson of Anamosa, Iowa, Deanna (Brett) McAtee of Perry, Iowa, and Tina (Chuck) James of Olin, Iowa; two brothers, Jim (Mary) Herb of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Dwayne (Deb) Herb of Hiawatha, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Kayla, Justin, David, Dana, Douglas, Emily and Olivia; and one great-grandchild, JJ.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; his twin, Danny Herb, and Lee Herb; and a daughter, Tami Jo.
Memorial donations may be directed to the family, and a donation in Donald's honor will be made to a charity of their choice.
