Donald J. Berger, 71, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, July 10, 2017, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. Service: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick Catholic Church by the Rev. Ivan Nienhaus. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery. A Rosary will be recited Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Teahen Funeral Home, where friends may visit with the family Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m., and at the church Thursday after 9:30 a.m.
Donald is survived by his wife, Vicki; son, Jon; grandson, Korbin; sisters, Joann Gladwin, Diane (Tom) Lieb and Roxy Foreman; and many loving nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his precious daughter, Sara Elizabeth, who was his shine.
Donald Joseph was born on April 30, 1946, to Donald and Florence Bock Berger in Cedar Rapids. He graduated from and was a wrestler for Jefferson High School, and later for the University of Iowa. Donald was an Army veteran, and proudly served during the Vietnam War. Donald graduated from the University of California at Northridge with a degree in finance. On April 24, 1968, he was united in marriage to Vicki Luedeman at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Donald retired in 2010 after working for Qwest as an outside technician for many years.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus 909 and Izaak Walton. Donald loved to be outdoors, hunting and fishing whenever he could, and was a devoted Hawkeye fan. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandson.
Donald was a great husband, dad, grandpa and friend, and he will be deeply missed.
