Donald G. Helmick, 90, of Marion, passed away Dec. 9, 2015, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born July 6, 1925, in Mark, Iowa, to Harmon and Faye Dabney Helmick. He married Mary Lou Francis on Nov. 12, 1955, in Stiles, Iowa. Donald was the vice president and general manager at P.E.S. Incorporated in Marion. He was a member of Post No. 298 of the American Legion in Marion and was affiliated with the Peace Christian Reformed Church. He enjoyed gardening and being outdoors. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Mary Lou Helmick; two sons, Jeffrey (Cindy) Helmick of Stone City and Jerry (Joyce) Helmick of Mount Vernon; three daughters, Valerie (special friend Julia Dye) Helmick of Olin, Vickie (Jeff) Linsley of Sacramento, Calif., and Melia (Edward) Fillmore of Springdale, Ark.; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; and a brother, Kyle (Sue) Helmick of Hot Springs, Ark.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Wendy Helmick; two brothers, Jewell and IO Helmick; and two sisters, Willadean Archer and Genevieve Helmick.
A memorial service with luncheon following will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 11, at Peace Christian Reformed Church, 6600 C Ave. NE, Cedar Rapids. Graveside services with burial will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, at the IOOF Cemetery in Bloomfield. Military rites will be performed by Reed-Whisler Post No. 78 of the American Legion in Bloomfield.
