DONALD HARRIS
Cedar Rapids
Donald Joseph Harris, 85, passed away peacefully at home on July 12, 2016.
Don was born June 17, 1931, to Lloyd and Laura Harris in Des Moines, Iowa. Don married the love of his life, Monica "Moni Lou" Boehme, on Nov. 17, 1956, and they were in love for 59 1/2 years. Don and Monica spent the early years of their marriage in Des Moines, where Don worked for Iowa Power and Light Co. Don served in the Iowa National Guard, Camp Dodge, Iowa, 1951-1956 Company No. 3655 as sergeant first class. They began their family in Des Moines, where Randy, Laurie and Tim were born.
They then purchased and had a successful ServiceMaster Cleaning and Restoration business in Cedar Rapids for 46 years. Their family grew when son Mark was born. Don was a member of Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Council 909. Son Randy and his wife, Maureen, continued the family business upon dad's retirement. Moving to Las Vegas after retirement, Don and Monica enjoyed 10 years being near their Irish cousins. They returned to Iowa to be with family for their later years. Then they relocated to Meridian, Idaho, in January 2016 to be near their daughter, Laurie, and son-in-law, Peter Hingtgen, and family.
Don loved God and his Catholic faith, his family and treasured his close friends and his Irish Trollan cousins. His greatest joys were when his family and friends gathered to celebrate at the family pool, an Iowa Hawkeye game or the Trollan family reunions.
He was a strong faithful husband, father, papa, great- papa and friend.
Don is survived by his wife, Monica; son, Randy (Maureen); grandchildren, Kelly Jo and Leland; great-grandchildren, Elli Jo, Keaton and Knoxx; daughter, Laurie (Peter); granddaughter, Jennifer (Mark); great-grandchildren, Max and Finley; granddaughter, Allison (Brian); great-granddaughter, Teresa; son, Tim (Brenda); grandchildren, Matthew and Jacob; son, Mark (Kelly) and granddaughter, Madeline.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Laura Harris.
Funeral Mass will be in Cedar Rapids at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 30, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, with a luncheon to follow the Mass. Rite of committal will be Sunday, July 31, at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Georgetown, Iowa, following 10:30 a.m. Mass. Don's love will live forever in our hearts.
