Donald "Don" Hamilton, 83, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Tuesday, May 10, 2016, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids with his family at his side.
His visitation will be Friday, May 13, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Lahey Funeral Home in Wyoming, Iowa. A private graveside service and burial will be at Wyoming Cemetery, with military honors.
Don was born April 6, 1933, in Maquoketa, Iowa, to Dorothy Hamilton. He graduated from Wyoming High School. He was a Korean War veteran, serving in the U.S. Marines from 1951 to 1954, being honorably discharged in 1954. He was one of the first six drivers for CRST and went onto drive for Landstar.
Don was a member of the American Legion and looked forward to attending Milestones in Cedar Rapids. where he enjoyed visiting and made many friends. He enjoyed playing cards, especially euchre, and going to the casino. He was an avid Tony Stewart NASCAR fan.
Those left to cherish his memories are his five children, Karmen Smith of Cedar Rapids, Steve Hamilton and Dan Hamilton, both of Anamosa, Melody Thompson of Cedar Rapids and Doug (Sandy) Hamilton of Arizona; two sisters, Sandee Conley of Anamosa and Linda (Roger) Workman of Marion; three brothers, Thomas (Faye) Hamilton of Olin, Larry Hamilton of Cedar Rapids and Gener (Judy) Hamilton of Oskaloosa; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy; two sisters, Yvonne Merrill and Janet Bodkin, a brother-in-law, Rich Conley; and nephew, Kenny Hamilton.
Don's family would like to extend a special thank- you to the staff of Milestones and the 5th floor staff at St. Luke's Hospital for taking such great care of him.
