Donald was born in
Jackson County on Sept. 25, 1927, to Roy and Wilma (Hartman) Hainstock. He attended Fulton School through eighth grade and graduated from Maquoketa High School with the class of 1945. He entered the
United States Air Force and later received a medical discharge. Don was united in marriage on Oct. 19, 1947, to Betty (Rechterman) Schroeder at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Lost Nation.
Don was a director of Wheatland Mutual Insurance Company for 45 years. He and Betty farmed west of Lost Nation for many years. He also drove semi truck for White Trucking in Lost Nation and as an over-the-road driver for Cuckler Building Systems of Monticello. In his later years, he helped at his son Ray's business.
Don and Betty spent several summers at Horseshoe Lake near Merrifield, Minn. They also spent 29 years at Myrtle Beach, S.C., during the winter months. Don loved to fish and play cards, Toronto style Sheepshead and pinochle with his card club friends. He also enjoyed golfing, bowling and softball in his earlier years. He liked going to the Hainstock family reunion in June in Reedsburg and Colfax, Wis. He lived a very busy life, until illness slowed him down in later years.
Don is survived by his wife of 66 years, Betty; sons, Steve (Becky) of Lost Nation and Ray (Julie) of Wyoming, Iowa, his grandchildren, Jeremy of Marion, Travis of Lost Nation, Joelle of Burleson, Texas, Josh (Rosa) of St. Michael, Minn., and Chelsea (Adam) Sheppard of Monticello; his great-grandchildren, Emily and Damon Hainstock of Lost Nation and Cruz and Cash Sheppard of Monticello; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
