Donald M. Gilmore, 94, of Monticello died Sunday, Oct. 29, 2017, at the Monticello Nursing and Rehab Center. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 1, at Kramer Funeral Home in Monticello, where a parish vigil service will be held at 5 p.m. Visitation will continue from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Monticello. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, at the church. The Rev. Paul Baldwin will officiate. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Monticello, where the Monticello Drill Team will accord military honors.

Don was born Sept. 2, 1923, north of Springville, the son of Ralph and Alma (DeVoe) Gilmore. He graduated from Anamosa High School in 1943 and served in the U.S. Army during the Occupation of Japan after World War II, from 1946 to 1947. He married Mildred Evers in February 1948. Don was a police officer and eventually the chief of police in Monticello. He worked at Julin Printing and retired from Energy Manufacturing on his 62nd birthday. In his spare time, he was an avid fisherman, loved to play cards and was a good dancer.

He is survived by his four daughters, Sandra (Gary) Schwab, Jana (Jim) Siebels, LuAnn (Gary) Weber and Faye (Kevin) Williams, all of Monticello; five grandchildren, Daniel Ginter, Jason Whittemore, Mindy (Ben) Capron, Shawn (Christina) Weber and Noah Williams; five great-grandchildren, Morgan Ginter, Chesney and Ava Capron, and Madalynn and Kaden Weber; in-laws, MayAnn Gilmore of Anamosa, Jack Evers of Rowley and Kathleen Postel of Monticello.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred; a grandson, Scott Weber; two brothers; and three sisters.
