Donald Edward Zvacek, 89, passed away on Aug. 2, 2022, following a long illness.
Don was born on a farm near Ely to Bessie and Edward Zvacek on Dec. 5, 1932. He graduated from Wilson High School in 1951 and later joined the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He married Betty Lou Lala in 1952. A 31-year employee of Alliant Energy, he worked his way up from the power plant to the dispatch center during that time. After his retirement, he also worked part-time for Hy-Vee and for U of Iowa Athletic Events. He married Karen Pope October 1998.
He leaves behind a brother, Robert (Marilyn, deceased), plus their two children, Bret (Mindy) and Alyson (Todd) Eadie. Don’s three children include Dennis (Donalyn) of Tulsa, Okla., Susan (Tony Miller) of Castle Rock, Colo., and Kevin (Nancy) of Cedar Rapids. He also leaves behind stepchildren, Brenda (Keith) Differding of Marion, Dennis Pope of Chicago and Bonnie Sicotte of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren and great-grandchildren include Amy Zvacek, Tulsa; Don Zvacek (Lindsey) and children, Reed, Noelle and Josephine, Madisonville, La.; Jeri and Leslie Miller of Golden, Colo., and Stacey (Kirk) McGahey of Littleton, Colo.; Sara Marie Differding, Cedar Rapids; Ryan (Sarah) Differding and children, Cash, Zona and Hazel; Jessica Sicotte, Cedar Rapids and children, Kendall and Connor Daniel; and Andrea (Taylor) Henkes and children, Carter and Keaton Estrada.
A Celebration of Life for Don is planned for a later date.
