Donald R. Eckhart, 92, died Wednesday, June 10, 2015, at Ed & Joan Hemphill Hospice Inpatient Unit of St. Luke's Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 15, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vinton with the Rev. Stephen Preus officiating. Interment will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton with graveside military rites conducted by Geo. G. Luckey American Legion Post No. 57 of Vinton and Iowa Military Funeral Honors. Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. Sixth St., Vinton.
Donald was born Sept. 3, 1922, in LaPorte City, to Morris and Delia (LaCrosse) Eckhart. During World War II, he served his nation in the U.S. Army. On Aug. 4, 1944, he was united in marriage to Arlene Hanneman at Lincoln, Neb. The couple loved to travel and camp together. She preceded him in death on Feb. 14, 2014.
Donald farmed and also drove a maintainer for Benton County Secondary Roads. He later worked on the Jim Peterson farm. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He enjoyed wood working and carving. Donald was an accomplished gardener.
He is survived by his son, Larry (Kathy Loeffelholz) Eckhart of Potosi, Wis.; his daughter, Linda (Dean) Ohrt of Traer; his grandchildren, Griffin Eckhart of Platteville, Wis., Andrea Riniker of Beloit, Wis., Daryl (Jessica) Ohrt of Marietta, Ga., and Dianne (Paul) Haywood of Union; seven great grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and two brothers, George (Oma) Eckhart of Vinton and Charles Eckhart of Waterloo.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert and Lloyd; and his sisters, Irene, Mabel and Mae.
