Donald "Don" Wayne Ransford, 65, of Robins, Iowa, passed away on Jan. 29, 2022, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 7, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion, Iowa. Private family burial will take place at Brown Cemetery in Colesburg, Iowa.
Don was born on Nov. 29, 1956, in Anamosa, Iowa, the son of Edward and Dorothy (Windsor) Ransford. He was a 1976 graduate of Marion High School and went on to attend Kirkwood Community College to earn his fire science certificate. On June 5, 1976, Don was united in marriage to Sharon Ann Moore, in Marion. He worked for the Cedar Rapids Fire Department for 38 years before retiring in November of 2018. Don was active in the Boy Scouts, Linn County Regional Hazmat Team, Hiawatha Fire Department and the National Partnership Pete for Environmental Education. He ran a consulting company teaching for many years at numerous locations. Don enjoyed the outdoors, cooking, Nascar, and tinkering. He loved being a grandpa most of all, Jaxen was his sidekick. Don will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Don is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 45 years, Sharon Ransford of Robins; his sons, Brad Ransford and Scott (Jessica) Ransford of Cedar Rapids; grandson, Jaxen of Cedar Rapids; brother, Carl (Joanne) of Cedar Rapids; brother-in-law, Mike Smith of Springville, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Wendy Ransford of Marion and Cheryl Moore-Curry of Jesup, Iowa; nieces and nephews, Janis (Brad) Lyons, and their children, Lucas Ransford, Jenna Lyons and Emmalee Lyons of Cedar Rapids, Jessie (Brian) Herzberg, and their son, Max, Mike Brown of Cedar Rapids, David Ransford of Marion, Jeremy Smith of Cedar Rapids, Michelle Smith of Springville, Ryan Wienhold of Kansas, Karen Edgington of Nevada, Iowa, Abby Moore of Chicago, Ill., and Alex Moore of Jesup; and lifelong friend, Delos "Del" Gillespie of Olathe, Kan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Dorothy; sister, Margie Ransford; brothers, Johnnie Ransford and Ron Ransford; and sisters and brothers- in-law, Diane (Dale) Novak, Dave Moore and Debi Smith.
Memorials in Don's memory may be directed to Cedar Rapids Firefighters Foundation, Iowa Firefighters Association or an educational fund for his grandson, Jaxen.
