DONALD "DON" GRANT LACY
Cedar Rapids
Donald "Don" Grant Lacy, 77, of Cedar Rapids, passed away June 30, 2021, at Mercy One in Waterloo.
Don was born June 9, 1944, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Floyd and Elva Lacy. He attended school in Cedar Rapids graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School, with the Class of 1962. He married his high school sweetheart, Carol Mathews, in 1965. After graduation, he was employed at Rockwell Collins and then worked at Rockwell Goss for 13 years thinking that would be his career for life. It was meant to be his
calling to become a firefighter for the City of Cedar Rapids, where he loved the career and serving the citizens of Cedar Rapids for 30 years before retiring. After retiring, he was actively involved with helping Cedar Rapids Fire Department history, assisted with their Honor Guard and was also one of the leaders in getting a fire museum established for Cedar Rapids at Station 1. In his spare time, he loved tinkering with projects to build or restore things with special friends and neighbors. Most importantly, he enjoyed the time he spent with his family and pets.
He is survived by his loving wife, Carol; son, Christopher (Kelly) Lacy; granddaughters, Lauren and Kayley Lacy; brother, Jim (Claire) Lacy of North Carolina; niece, Deborah (Bill) Tipton; nephews, Russell Lacy and Robert (Carla) Lacy, all of California; sister-in-law, Ellen Lacy of California; and two special friends Denny (Rita) Best in Arizona.
Don was preceded in death by his parents.
There will be a time of visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 8, at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home and services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 9, at the Chapel at Cedar Memorial, with graveside services to follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to either Cedar Rapids or Iowa City Firefighter's Benevolent in care of Honor Guard.
Online condolences may be left for the family at cedarmemorial.com under obituaries.
