Donald Algie Thomas departed this life to be with Jesus, his Lord and Savior, on September 4, 2024, at the age of 84.

Don was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, but spent most of his life in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the city he passionately served. Don graduated from Roosevelt as a “Roughrider,” and graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in Civil Engineering. Don was also a certified land surveyor. Don worked at Shive Hattery & Associates, DC Taylor Company, and Anderson-Bogert Engineers and Surveyors. Don was elected the Streets Commissioner for the City of Cedar Rapids from 1994 - 2005 serving 12 years. As Streets Commissioner he worked tirelessly to bring about the success of the Metro Area Trails Systems, which we all enjoy today. Don was civic-minded, supporting the Land Office at Usher’s Ferry, a proud member of the Optimist Club, Iowa Ski Club, and a rower in the Dragon Boat Races. Don attended Westminster Presbyterian Church where he was a deacon, member of the Men’s Breakfast Group, Habitat for Humanity helper, and enjoyed a mission trip.

Don was a beloved father and grandfather. Don’s daughter, (Brenda) Lee Thomas Kruse and her husband, Jeff Kruse, of Asheville, North Carolina, grandchildren Shay and Hunter, and two great-grandchildren were blessed to surround Don with love in North Carolina the last three years of his life. Don was preceded in his death by his parents Algie and Alma Thomas and his brother, Alan Thomas.

Family, friends, and co-workers are invited to celebrate Don’s life at Westminster Presbyterian Church at 1285 Third Ave. SE on July 4 at 2:00 p.m. (Ice cream, Don’s favorite food, will be served after the service.)
