Dolores A. Shannon, 74, of Independence, died Monday, Aug. 14, 2017, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence.
Dolores was born May 6, 1943, in Dubuque, Iowa, the daughter of Christian
S. and Lelia E. (Kane) Strief. She attended Hopkinton Elementary School and graduated from Maquoketa Valley High School in 1961. She went on to study at Upper Iowa University in Fayette. On April 20, 1963, she married Russell Dean Shannon in Hopkinton. They made their home in Independence. Dolores worked as a rural postal carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 25 years. She also worked at the Mental Health Institute and B & D Services, both in Independence.
She is survived by her children, Pat Shannon, Independence, Nancy Shannon, Newton, Beth (Randy) Koppes, Iowa City, Mike (Lori) Shannon, Independence, and Tim (Tina) Shannon, Marion; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Sandy Winterowd, Batavia, Ill.; and two brothers, Jim Strief, Le Claire, and Bob Strief, Olathe, Kan.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Shannon; parents; and a brother, Gary Strief.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, at St. John's Catholic Church, Independence, with the Rev. David Beckman presiding. Burial will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Independence. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday at Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence. A rosary service will be held at 2 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 8 p.m. Wednesday.
