Doling, Eleanor M.
Eleanor M. Doling, 80, lifetime resident of Iowa City, died Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. A celebration of Eleanor's life will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service, with burial to follow at the West Branch Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Eleanor was born Feb. 10, 1931, in Johnson County, to Gale and Lena (Miller) Gritton. She graduated in 1948 from Springdale High School in Springdale, Iowa. She attended UNI (then Iowa State Teachers College). She taught in rural Johnson County schools then substituted in the Iowa City Schools. She was employed for almost 30 years at the University of Iowa Law Library, retiring in 1997.
She was a 50-year member of First United Methodist Church, Iowa City. She had served on the cancer board and been active with support groups for diabetes. She had lived with diabetes for 52 years.
Eleanor was married May 28, 1950 to Thomas G. Doling. To this union were born three children: Patricia Ellen Doling of Iowa City, Terry Thomas Doling (Barbara) of Ankeny and Susan Grace (Larry) Seaton of Iowa City. In addition five grandchildren survive: Micheal, Alissa Doling, and Kelli (Andy) Katzman, plus Brittany and Stephanie Seaton; and one great-granddaughter, Olivia Katzman. Surviving brothers are Earl Thomas (Virginia) Gritton of Madison, Wis., and Larry Gale Gritton (Jean) of Manchester. Surviving sisters are Marilyn (Fred) Charbon of Iowa City and Judith (Jerry) Cwiertnia of Newport Beach, Calif.; plus a nephew, Ronald Moll of Spokane, Wash.; and numerous other nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas G. Doling; her parents, Gale and Lena Gritton; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Kenneth and Patricia (Doling) Moll of Spokane, Wash.; and a nephew, Gale Charbon of Tiffin.
The family sincerely thanks the many doctors and nurses at Mercy Iowa City, and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for their care and compassion.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Eleanor's memory.
