Doherty, Dennis Edward
Dennis Edward Doherty, 66, of Iowa City, died Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at Parkview Manor in Wellman. A private graveside service will be held at Olin Cemetery in Olin. The family will hold a visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Lahey Funeral Home in Olin.
Dennis Edward Doherty was born Dec. 9, 1946, in Keokuk, Iowa. He was a 1965 graduate of Burlington High School and received a Bachelor of Arts degree, graduating from the University of Iowa College of Nursing in 1973. Dennis was one of the first two men to graduate from the College of Nursing.
He married Barbara Jo Slater on Aug. 7, 1971, at Olin Methodist Church in Olin.
Dennis had worked in the Children's Psychiatric Unit at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for seven years. He then worked at the Oakdale Medical and Classification Center for the Iowa Prison System, retiring in 2006. After his retirement he worked for three 3 years as an education associate for the Iowa City Community School District until he was diagnosed with Dementia.
He enjoyed doing home improvement projects, gardening, collecting sport cards and especially collecting and listening to music.
Dennis is survived by his wife, Barbara; their two children, Christopher Doherty of Tipton and Katherine (Jason) Sieren of Keota and their children, Carmen, Greta and Charlotte; and a sister, Patricia (Tim) Claassen of Umatilla, Ore.
He enjoyed being part of the Jay and Rosemary Slater family.
Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer's Association.
