Diane M. Smith, 88, died Friday, March 17, 2017, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics following cardiovascular disease.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 22, at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City. The graveside committal service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 23, at Memory Gardens Cemetery, with the Rev. Dr. Barrie Tritle officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Lloyd and Diane Smith Scholarship Fund at the UI College of Education, c/o University of Iowa Foundation.
Diane was born May 23, 1928, in Rock Port, Mo., the daughter of Clelle and Lois Burke Sanders. She received her bachelor's degree from Iowa State Teachers College. On June 6, 1953, Diane married Lloyd Smith in Woodbine, Iowa.
Diane was a teacher in Woodbine, Corning and Belmond, and for six years at Horace Mann Elementary in Iowa City. She loved her home and found great peace among the trees, birds and wildlife.
Survivors include her three children, Brian Smith of Cumberland, Stephanie Smith (Scott Cobler) of North Liberty and Suzanne Smith (Joe Bauer) of Iowa City; her grandchildren, Michael (Amanda) Clark of Solon, Corey (Briana) Clark of Iowa City, Justin (Jenny) Clark of North Liberty, Tyler Clark and fiancee, Kendel Seydel, of Kalona, Anthony Smith of Cumberland and Andrew Smith of Exira; two great-grandchildren, Isaac and Nora Clark, and two expected great-grandchildren; and her beloved pets, CJ and Peaches.
Diane was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Lloyd.
