Detweiler, Ivan
Ivan Detweiler, 81, of Iowa City, went home to be with his Lord Tuesday, June 21, 2011, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 25, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City, with burial to follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Coralville.
Visitation will be Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Ivan was born Sept. 2, 1929, in Thomas, Okla., the son of John and Fannie (Miller) Detweiler, and was one of 14 children. He served in the Army for two years. On March 15, 1957, he was united in marriage to Patricia M. Burgess. The couple made their home in Iowa City, raising a family of six. Ivan owned and operated Detweiler Painting for many years.
Those who knew Ivan knew of his love of family, beagles, fishing, pitching horseshoes, and spending winters in Florida. Ivan was a member of the American Legion as well as several beagle clubs.
His family includes his wife, Pat; children, Michael (Becca), Patrick, Stephen (Marcia), Rhonda, Robin Burns and Lisa; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Pearl Bontrager, Susan Stutzman and Cora White; and brothers, Irvin (Barbara) and Freeman.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Elmer, LeeRoy, Melvin and John; and sisters, Mary, Alice, Sally and Jane.
A memorial fund has been established in Ivan's memory.
