DENNIS SCHAEFER
Long Beach, Wash.
Dennis M. "Denny" Schaefer, 69, of Long Beach, Wash., died suddenly at a Portland, Ore., hospital on Monday, March 30, 2015. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, April 11, at Good News Baptist Church in Cedar Rapids. A time of fellowship and sharing will immediately follow in the church hall.
Denny was born Aug. 12, 1945, in Cedar Rapids, to Russell and Margaret Schaefer. After a short service in the U.S. Navy, he became a merchant marine and served on ships sending supplies to the troops in Vietnam. He later worked on vessels sending supplies to the oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico, and worked on barges on the Mississippi and Ohio rivers.
Denny's main interests throughout his life were bluegrass and old-time music. He was an accomplished guitarist and banjo player. Toward his last years of life, Denny's dogs, Boxer, Diesel and Molly became his greatest joys.
Denny also loved to photograph along the Mississippi River and the northeast Iowa countryside. He was a faithful friend and never shied away from taking friends into his home when in need.
His family and friends will miss his gentle soul dearly.
Denny is survived by his daughter, Christie, and grandson, Lio Schaefer, of Portland, Ore.; and sister, RaeAnn Schaefer of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his grandparents, Perry and Ella Knapp and Raymond and Mary Schaefer.
Memorials in Denny's name may be directed to Good News Baptist Church.
