Dennis Lee Smith, 72, of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, March 23, 2022, at his home following a short illness. Friends may visit with the family on Saturday April 2, 2022 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Teahen Funeral Home. Military Honors will be presented by the Air Force at 1:30 p.m.
Dennis is survived by his wife, Cathy; son, Erik Smith; granddaughter, Bailee Smith; former wife, Pam Smith; brother, Terry Smith; sister, Joan (Roger) Gass; Andrew, Carrie, Damieon and Jace Black; and many other extended family members.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
Dennis was born on Nov. 27, 1949, in Mattoon, Ill., son of Marion and Dorothey Rardin Smith. After high school, Dennis joined the Air Force and was a sergeant serving during the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1976. Dennis married Cathy Forbes on Dec. 1, 1990, in Mt. Vernon. He worked at Precision Bearing, Conveyor Engineering & Manufacturing before becoming owner of Tri-Smith Industrial Supply.
Dennis enjoyed bowling and playing softball, and was a huge St. Louis Cardinals, Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Bears fan. Most of all, Dennis loved being a husband, father and Papa to his family and his many extended members.
Memorials may be directed to the family and will be used for a local veterans group.
