Dennis Kahler
DENNIS ALLEN KAHLER
Iowa City
Dennis Allen Kahler, the first child of Christy C. and Sarah Leta (Bruner) Kahler, was born at home on their farm in rural Johnson County on Oct. 24, 1930. He attended rural Oxford No 4 through 8th grade and graduated from Oxford High School in 1948. Shortly thereafter, Dennis was drafted into the U.S. Marine Corps and was discharged in 1952. Using the GI Bill, he attended and successfully completed studies in TV repair at the Amazon Technical School in Des Moines.
Returning home, he was soon employed by Bob's Radio and TV on Muscatine Avenue in Iowa City. This business was a long-time landmark on the eastern edge of Iowa City. As television was just beginning to become a popular staple in American homes in the early 1950s, this timing afforded Dennis a long and successful career.
From his teen years, Dennis had the ability to simply "fix things." He became involved in amateur radio, participating in many "Field Days" in the Midwest area, often successfully reaching other enthusiasts around the world.
Dennis married Dorothy G. Johnson Enfield on July 23, 1966 in a private ceremony at the Methodist Church in Iowa City. During their 40 years of marriage, they made their home on Fourth Avenue in Iowa City. Dorothy passed away in 2007.
As health problems lead to declining health in 2014, Dennis came to make his home at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington, Iowa, where he passed away peacefully about 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 5, 2016.
He is survived by his two sisters, Delsena E. Henningfield and her husband, Richard, of Washington, and Lureta J. Kahler-Gibson of Toledo, as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one nephew and his wife, Dorothy.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 19, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City, with burial of his and Dorothy's cremated remains following at the Oxford Township Cemetery near Oxford.
Cards for Dennis's family may be directed to the funeral home and online condolences may be left at www.gayandciha.com.
