Dennis "Denny" Allen Burgess, 74, of Springville, Iowa, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2022. A visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion, Iowa. A funeral service will take place at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 11, at Marion Methodist Church with Pastor Mike Morgan officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Shade Cemetery in Marion. Denny was born Jan. 31, 1948, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Harry and Nora (Monserud) Burgess. He attended Marion High School and went on to graduate from Kirkwood Community College. Denny was united in marriage to Michaelle Ann Orness on July 18, 1969, in Marion. Three children and nine grandchildren were born from this union. He served honorably in the United States Army from 1969-70 during the Vietnam Era. Denny was very patriotic and loved his country very much.
Denny owned and operated Denny's Muffler Center since 1974. He retired in 2007. Denny was a member of the Cedar Valley Offroad Association, Lutheran Church of Resurrection, Eastern Iowa Shooting Dog Association, Legion Member, Marion Foundation Board and a Junior Achievement Mentor.
Denny enjoyed traveling, hunting, racing Jeeps, golfing, camping, boating and water skiing. He loved horses, riding his Razor, playing cards, and being a field trialer for dog hunting. Above all else, Denny cherished his time spent with family. He and Mickey never missed their grandkids events.
Survivors include his wife, Michaelle A. Burgess of Springville; children, Angela Burgess-Erkel of Marion, Walker (Kasey) Burgess of Anamosa and Chelsea (Jim) McCurdy of Marion; grandchildren, Brennan Erkel, Wyatt Erkel, Camden Burgess, Hailey Erkel, Charlee McCurdy, Abel Burgess, Emma McCurdy, KoraLea Burgess and Tucker McCurdy; mother, Nora Burgess of Marion; brothers, Mark Burgess of Marion and Tim (Amanda) Burgess of Mesa, Ariz.; mother-in-law, Bessie Orness of Marion; brother-in-law, Mike (Barb) Orness of Marion; foreign exchange student, David Becerra-Alonso; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Savannah Rose "Big Dog."
He was preceded in death by his father, Harry Burgess; father-in-law, Gordon Orness; brother-in-law, Cary Orness; and nephew, T.J. Burgess.
Memorials may be directed to the family in Denny's memory. Memorials will be distributed to Wounded Warriors, University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital, Springville Fire Department and the Marion High School Foundation.
