Dennis Cyril Mahan, a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy, passed away on Friday, Aug. 12, 2022. He was 71.
The son of Robert Paul and Ida Matilda Mahan, Dennis grew up in Cedar Rapids. He was born on March 12, 1951, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and graduated from Jefferson High School. While he was in the Navy, he earned a degree
in political science from the University of California, a master’s degree in business, and a teaching degree for Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids.
At the age of 18, Dennis enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He valued this service highly and retired in 1991 at the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer. As part of his service he was at American Embassy in Rome, Italy, and Subic Bay/Cubi Point Naval Station in the Philippines. He retired in 1991 with the rank of Senior Chief. After retiring and evacuating from the Mount Pinatubo eruption in the Philippines, Dennis moved back to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and proceeded to work in many different industries before deciding to devote himself to being a teacher and obtaining a teaching degree from Mount Mercy College. Dennis eventually moved to Las Vegas, Nev., to teach and was followed there by his wife Eva after her retirement. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and visiting historical locations, and made it a point to travel someplace every year.
Dennis was married Eva Solidum in 1972. Dennis is survived by his children Eugeniana (Anna) Ida Mahan-Miller (wife of Scot Mahan-Miller) and Robert Marcelo, and adopted a daughter, Mary Dawn. He strived to give his children as many adventures as possible, living the belief that gifting experiences meant more than material things.
Dennis is also survived by his granddaughters, Alexandra, Adelaide, Isabelle and Skye; his siblings, Robert J. Mahan (married to Anita) of Round Rock, Texas, Catherine Schad, Timothy Mahan (married to Linda) Idaho, Anthony Mahan, Patricia (Mahan) Schloss (married to Richard) and Pauletta Mahan; and nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his mother and father, Ida Matilda and Robert Paul Mahan.
The viewing and memorial services will be from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at Palm Eastern Mortuary, 7600 S Eastern Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89123. The family will be there to greet friends and family. A committal service with full military honors will follow from noon to 12:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at Southern Nevada Veteran's Memorial Cemetery, 1900 Veteran's Memorial Dr., Boulder City, NV 89005.
