Dennis Russell Brubaker, 68, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2017, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha.

Services will be private in accordance with Denny's wishes.

Surviving are a daughter, Tanya Brubaker; a brother, Brett Brubaker; his stepmother, Jean Brubaker; stepsister, Donna Reynolds; stepbrothers, Steven and David Heffelfinger; and stepsister, Lynn Struck.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Dee Anna Beckman; stepfather, Charles Musker; and stepbrother, Larry Heffelfinger.

Denny was born Dec. 17, 1948, to John D. "Jack" Brubaker and Norma Rae (Wayson) Brubaker in Vinton, Iowa.

Denny graduated from Cedar Rapids Jefferson High School in 1967 and, soon after, joined the Marines. He attained the rank of lance corporal and received Purple Hearts for injuries suffered in Vietnam.

After his enlistment, he dispatched and drove for Century and Yellow Cab companies in Cedar Rapids for 35 years before taking a medical retirement.

Denny enjoyed vintage sci-fi and thriller movies. He loved to research the actors involved in the creation of these films, but his greatest passion was sports. Among his favorite teams were the Iowa Hawkeyes, Minnesota Twins, Washington Redskins and San Francisco 49ers. Clayton Dalrymple was his baseball hero of all time. Often Denny could be found listening to a game on the radio as he recorded the statistics.

Denny was a very kind, trusting and forgiving soul. He was grateful for his lifelong friend, Bob Carstens, and others who were there for him throughout his life.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
